Hello 4-H CANSKI Racers and Fitness Skiers,
We had over 65 people for the end of the year shindig last Friday. It was a really good time - great potluck food, lots of fun on the snow, photos, awards, and door prizes! Scott Nesvold, who volunteers his time to coach, coordinate grooming at Ashwabay, and as 4-H CANSKI webmaster, was our volunteer of the year for 2010. Thanks for all you do Scott!
The volunteers who graciously donate their time to handle club gear let me know that we'll do a last gear check-in this Wednesday for those that missed it Friday. So - Wednesday (3/10) from 4:30-6pm at Ashland High School (same place we checked gear out). Please help get the word out!
Racers, we committed to 20 minutes of schlepping gear from Sara Hudson's pickup truck into the ski closet on Tuesday after school (3:30). Thanks for helping out with that!
I've attached suggestions for off season training. The most important thing that you can do this spring is to get some strength in. This could be mountain biking up some big sandy hills, or time in the weight room. It might ideally consist of both. If your spring sport involves some type of running or steady exercise, strength is what I'd most wish for from you to get you ready to ski well next winter. 20 minutes 2-3 times a week of strength would be a great place to start. If you don't have a spring sport, take a close look at the training suggestions I've attached. The key component is make sure that you are having fun and getting variety in. I also have roller skis available to club members. Remember the 4, 3, 2, 1 ... training program if you are in spring sports (4 days of ski and one of run on week #one, 3 and 2 on week #2, etc...). Most of you are already on week 3 and 2 this week. This will help keep you injury free as you transition. Have your coach call me (or I can call him/her) if they have questions.
Let me know if you are interested in a 1 x week training group for the summer. I may put a group together to do strength, play games, and roller ski if there is interest. There will also be a regular biking group if you are interested. Talk to Coach Dennis about that (373-5666) and about summer biathlon events.
Thanks to all our volunteers and members for a great season on snow this year! Officers, we'll probably have one more executive committee meeting this spring. Watch for service project and trail work opportunities this summer and fall... Enjoy the month or so of skiing that we have left, and call me if you are wondering where there is snow. This is one of the best months . . . crust skiing on the big lake or local fields (skate), no wax or klister skiing in the woods, the barrens, or our local trails. If you want company, give me or one of your team mates a call!
Ski Ya!
-Doug
